The Old Leader is Dead, Long Live the AI

Can AI Truly Lead? Will AI Be a Better Leader Than Humans?

Will AI Replace Human Leadership? A Thoughtful Perspective

Across countless articles, books, and podcasts, a prevailing notion emerges: artificial intelligence (AI) cannot replace the essence of human leadership. The common argument is that AI lacks empathy, emotional resonance, effective communication, and the ability to consider human emotions in decision-making.

As someone deeply engaged in human resource management, my initial stance aligns with this view. I remain skeptical that machines could ever truly replace the uniquely human qualities of leadership. However, taking a broader perspective, it’s worth acknowledging that AI may surpass human leaders in certain aspects.

Where AI Could Outperform Human Leaders

📌 Decision-Making Precision: In his article Will AI Replace Leadership?, Johncey George argues that leaders are responsible for setting direction and making critical decisions that shape an organization’s trajectory. If this is the case, couldn’t AI perform these functions just as well—if not better?

George also asserts that leaders navigate complexity, analyzing countless variables and interdependencies to make decisions based on judgment and experience. Here, AI could have a significant advantage—processing vast amounts of real-time data faster and more accurately than any human leader.

📌 Objective, Unbiased Decision-Making: Leaders inevitably shape company culture through their behaviors and actions. In this sense, could AI not be programmed to enforce a company’s core values—serving as an objective framework for decision-making that aligns with leadership’s vision?

In The Best Leaders Can’t Be Replaced by AI, Rasmus Horgaard argues that AI will struggle with personal issues and emotion-based decisions. However, we must also recognize the benefits of objective, bias-free decision-making. AI could be trained to recognize emotions, interpret non-verbal communication, and analyze patterns in employee behavior, improving workplace dynamics in ways that humans often fail to do consistently.

📌 Ethical Consistency & Compliance: Horgaard also emphasizes human values like ethics, loyalty, and courage as essential leadership traits. However, could AI not be trained to adhere to these principles—perhaps even more strictly than humans? Unlike people, AI wouldn’t be susceptible to personal bias, favoritism, or ethical lapses, as long as it’s programmed correctly. Of course, this places great responsibility on human developers to ensure that AI is trained with ethical considerations in mind.

What if AI Became a Leadership Tool?

Imagine a near-future scenario where continuous performance evaluations are conducted by AI.

Every Friday morning, AI could automatically track and log an employee’s accomplishments, behaviors, and teamwork contributions—in just two minutes.
✅ AI could provide structured, bias-free feedback, offering positive reinforcement and constructive suggestions.
✅ AI could ensure that all employee objectives meet the SMART criteria, enhancing clarity and accountability in goal-setting.
✅ AI could listen actively and detect patterns in employee concerns, offering personalized guidance and sophisticated decision-making support.

In this sense, could AI not provide more precise, data-driven, and consistent leadership support than human managers?

How Can Humans Stay Irreplaceable in Leadership?

This leads to a crucial question:

What can we do to prevent AI from fully replacing human leaders?

The answer—simple in theory, difficult in practice—is that leaders must become more human than ever before.

Develop greater empathy
Enhance active listening skills
Demonstrate unwavering loyalty and integrity
Express authentic human emotions—joy, doubt, laughter, vulnerability
Foster trust, mentorship, and deep interpersonal connections

As David De Cremer states in Leadership by Algorithm, emotional intelligence may need to increase sixfold in the coming years.

Perhaps, in the future, AI will focus on achieving results, while human leaders will focus on retaining and inspiring talent.

AI will optimize leadership—but humans will always define it.
